Diarrhea is a condition characterized by watery stools which come out with the high frequency of defecating, which more often than usual. Diarrhea usually lasts only a few days, but in some cases it extends to weeks. according to these situations, diarrheal diseases are classified into acute and chronic diarrhea. Acute diarrhea is diarrhea that lasts less than two weeks. While Chronic Diarrhea is diarrhea that lasts more than two weeks.

 

Causes

When a person has diarrhea, stool becomes watery because of the amount of fluid that is secreted into the intestine. Or conversely, the fluid in the intestine can not be absorbed and circulated throughout the body. This condition is influenced by many factors that can also make a brief or prolonged diarrhea.

 

Short diarrhea (short term) can be caused by:

-       Bacterial infections can also cause food poisoning (campylobacter, clostridium difficile, Escherichia coli, salmonella, and shigella).
-       Viral infections (rotavirus and norovirus).
-       The parasite Giardia intestinalis.
-       Appendicitis.
-       Food allergies.
-       Damage to the intestinal lining as a result of radiotherapy.
-       psychological problems (eg, anxiety disorders).
-       Foods that contain artificial sweeteners.
-       intolerance fructose (a natural sweetener in honey and fruits) and lactose intolerance (milk and similar products).
-       The consumption of alcohol in excess.
-       Side effects of medications (statins, chemotherapy drugs, laxatives, antibiotics, antacids containing magnesium, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs / SSRI, and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs / NSAIDs).

While diarrhea that lasts a long time (long-term) is usually caused by:
-       Crohn's disease, is inflammation of the lining of the digestive system.
-       Ulcerative colitis, a condition that affects the large intestine.
-       Irritable bowel syndrome or disruption of normal bowel function.
-       celiac disease or a disease that causes the body rejecting gluren protein.
-       microscopic colitis or similar type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes watery diarrhea.
-       Cystic fibrosis or hereditary disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.
-       bowel cancer.
-       chronic inflammation of the pancreas.
-       Side effects removal of the stomach (gastrectomy).

 

Symptoms

Diarrhea has different symptoms. started from someone who only suffers from a short stomachache with stool that is not too dilute to some who are suffering from stomach cramps with a very dilute stool. Long-term diarrhea usually makes sufferers often feel to defecate. Some of the symptoms of diarrhea are:
-       Loss of appetite
-       Headache
-       Nausea
-       Vomiting

Diarrhea usually will recover within two to four days. However it is advisable to consult to a doctor if suffering diarrhea for more than one week or until diarrhea interfere the quality of your sleep. In children, diarrhea usually lasts about five days to a week. If longer than that time they will be accompanied by vomiting or diarrhea, and blood in the stools, soon to go to a doctor.  On the other hand, a serious diarrhea or sustained can lead to dehydration. Dehydration should not be taken lightly because it can lead to death. In children, symptoms of dehydration can include fuss or fast asleep and less healthy. Moreover, rarely urinate, feeling cold and pale on feet and hands as well as mottled skin can also indicate dehydration. Parents are advised to be aware of symptoms of dehydration in children. Whereas in adults, symptoms of dehydration include loss of appetite, nausea and dizziness, fatigue or lack of energy, as well as dizziness when standing up.

Treatment

In children, diarrhea symptoms will usually disappear within 5-7 days or under two weeks. Whereas in adults, diarrhea usually recover within 2-4 days. The immune system of human that will fight the infection causes diarrhea naturally. Though the diarrhea can be cured by itself, you can relieve the symptoms by following a few suggestions.

Increase the fluid intake

Replacing lost fluids and electrolytes is one of important keys in the treatment of diarrhea. You or your child are advised to drink a few glasses of liquid often as possible despite experiencing symptoms of vomiting. Less fluid is better than none at all. Avoid fruit juices and carbonated beverages because it can worsen the condition of diarrhea, especially in children.

Food while suffering from diarrhea

If you suffer from diarrhea, make sure that you eat solid food after being able to eat. It is also recommended by health experts. Instead, portions of your meal should not be too big and avoid foods that are too heavy, spicy, or fatty.

Diarrhea with oral rehydration fluids

For those who are prone to dehydration, a doctor usually recommend the use of oral rehydration salts. Patients with diarrhea are advised to drink ORS is that they have serious health problems, such as heart disease, weak physics, and over the age of sixty years.

Prevention

Basically, the prevention of diarrhea depends on someone's discipline in maintaining the cleanliness of food and beverages. Special attention is needed to manage the food and drink of how to cook until the storage process. Thus, someone can avoid the development of microorganisms, such as bacteria that can cause diarrhea. In conclusion, the higher the standard of cleanliness, then the less your risk of diarrhea.
